What matters most? In meeting recently with a group of hospice volunteers, we inquired about lessons learned from their work with the dying. Here’s their collective wisdom:
- Say, “I love you!” If you need to reconcile with someone, do it today. Too many people wait until it’s too late;
- Stay connected. If you’ve been meaning to call someone to reconnect, why wait? Reach out regularly to family and friends;
- Appreciate the moment. Let go of regrets from yesterday and set aside worries of tomorrow. Breathe deeply, notice colors, have conversations, express gratitude, and live for today.
Finally, they emphasize, keep sight of your priorities. A simple exercise is to imagine yourself on your deathbed, reflecting upon, “What mattered most?” Now live it!
